Bravery Soup

Carlin the raccoon is afraid of everything—even his own shadow! Then he meets Big Bear, the bravest animal in all the land, who tells him that there is a way to get courage. Alone, Carlin must make a perilous journey and bring back the secret ingredient for Big Bear’s Bravery Soup. Scared but determined, Carlin sets off with some helpful gifts from his friends. He faces the dangers of the Forbidden Forest, Skulk Mountain, and the lair of a ferocious monster—only to find bravery in the most unexpected place.

Reviews

  • The colorful illustrations are rendered in acrylic and resemble finger painting. Changes in the text size add to the visual effect and aid in reading the story aloud. Children will enjoy seeing how self-sufficient and confident Carlin becomes because of his expedition.

    - School Library Journal

  • The bright acrylics and humorous details (Carlin is a comical sight decked out in armor and carrying his raft) soften the scary bits and also add some fun. This is a satisfying example of how facing fears helps to conquer them.

    - Booklist

  • The well-conceived art—bold, vibrant acrylics—capture Carlin’s fear and hope, his friends’ complicity and concern, and finally his determination and triumph.

    - Kirkus Reviews

  • With “Bravery Soup,” Cocca-Leffler, who has written and/or illustrated more than 30 books for children, may have created a classic. I think so. The awards will come, but, more important, children will be reading this story or having it read to them for many, many years.

    - The Telegraph of Nashua

  • Carlin accepts the challenge with great trepidation, but is soon surprised to find out that he really had nothing to fear and that there was much to learn by taking a chance. The wonderful illustrations bring to life Carlin’s emotions and the many stages in his journey. The book has a delightful feel to go along with its warm-hearted message.
