One Smart Cookie

Cookie is the best reader in the Baxter family—he’s even learning to write! This wouldn’t be so unusual, except that Cookie is a dog. Mr. and Mrs. Baxter think it’s great, but Nash and Duffy aren’t so impressed. Nash would much rather play video games than read. And Duffy is only interested in drawing. When Pet’s Day arrives at Nash and Duffy’s school, they bring in Cookie to show the other students. The other kids are amazed by the dog’s reading. Pretty soon, Cookie is the most popular student in school, and Nash and Duffy are starting to feel left out. But when Cookie’s special talent helps save the day, will Nash and Duffy finally understand the importance of reading?

Reviews

  • Quickly paced and high spirited, the engaging story is illustrated by cheerful illustrations with bright colors, busy patterns, and lively details that offer plenty for nonreaders to look at while the story is read aloud. With a fire safety lesson near the story’s end, this picture book would be a good addition to any fire prevention unit.
